One Mom’s Story: From Learning Challenges to Academic Success

When my son Alexander was diagnosed with ADHD (Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder) and Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) he was struggling terribly with school, but his grades consisted of A’s and B’s. Unfortunately, those grades were the result of entirely too much help from home.

Frustrated with the options presented by our school system and overwhelmed with the idea that Alex may never complete his education without parental assistance, I consulted with his psychiatrist and psychologist. Both recommended Learning Strategies, LLC. However, due to insurance restrictions, I put off our first consultation. As middle school approached, it became clear to me that I was doing Alex more harm than good by delaying his academic independence.

I turned to Learning Strategies, LLC hoping that Lynn Arnold and her team could address Alex’s learning challenges and provide him the confidence and tools for success. From the moment we met Lynn, Learning Strategies has been exceeding our expectations.

During our first meeting, she assured me that if she felt she couldn’t help Alex, she would not force us to continue his sessions. But, while we faced a few initial challenges, Lynn’s patience and Alex’s dedication to his education persevered. Following six months of intense, consistent work, I was thrilled to see Alex’s grades improve, and it was all his own work.

Since then, Alex has made the A-B honor roll on nearly every report card. His memory has improved significantly and he has learned many valuable skills, such as note taking. Now, not only am I confident, but Alex is also confident that he will continue to succeed throughout high school and beyond.

Not every child is a “born student.” Alex needed to gain his academic independence and simply learn how to go to school. Fortunately, Lynn and Learning Strategies are here to help him every step of the way. I only wish I would have called them sooner!
